Redmi Note was a huge hit for Xiaomi. And hence the Chinese phone-maker may be gearing up to release a metal-clad successor, based on newly leaked photos of the alleged Redmi Note 2. The image seems to have been taken at a testing area, probably inside the manufacturing facility where the Xiaomi Redmi Note 2 is being produced. The photo shows the top of the device from a high angle, revealing a blue frame that surrounds the handset partially indicating that the phone itself might be blue in color, suggesting that the Redmi Note 2 will be offered in various colors, although it cannot be said with certainty at this point. This is a bit unusual for the company as it normally sticks to white colour for their products. For the Xiaomi Redmi Note 2, the Beijing phone maker has gone back to the drawing board and has created a much more premium looking design. Although not confirmed, the photo does not seem to show a metal chassis similar to that found on the Xiaomi Mi4.
The top of the chassis has the 3.5mm headphone jack, and what appears to be an infrared remote unit for taking control of your living room. The phone will be released as Hongmi Note in China region. The image has been uploaded on Chinese Micro-blogging website Weibo (via GSM Arena). Earlier leaks suggested that the phone will feature a fingerprint sensor located below the rear camera and the LED Flash.
Specs of the Redmi Note 2 according to the leaked roadmap include a 5.5-inch display with HD resolution of 1280 x 720 (previously rumored to be Full HD), a Qualcomm Snapdragon 410 MSM8919 with quad-core processor CORTEX-A53 CPU, a 13-megapixel rear camera, and 5-megapixel front-facing camera. There have also been rumors that it will have a 3000+ mAh battery. There were reports that it might be powered by MediaTek (MT6795) Helio X10 processor and run on either Android 5.0.2 Lollipop or 5.1 Lollipop wrapped under MIUI 6.Earlier rumors also tipped 2GB of RAM and 16GB of internal storage, but this was later downgraded to 1GB of RAM and 8GB of internal storage (expandable to 32GB via micro SD). However, until the phone is officially announced, all of the above information is unconfirmed.
These core specifications appear to be a worthy improvement over the Redmi Note 4G. It was earlier reported that Xiaomi might release both Redmi Note 2 and Redmi Note 2 Pro on 29 June, with Xiaomi co-founder and CEO Lei Jun sparking rumors by posting on Weibo that the company would release a device on the day, but it didn’t happen. Let us expect the smartphone to be priced similarly as the Redmi Note 4G and well under the Rs.10000 mark. It’s commendable that the company will not increase the size of the smartphone, but merely the performance and functionality underneath.
Back in May the reveal of a Xiaomi road map for the coming months suggested that the Redmi Note 2 (aka Hongmi Note 2) will hit the shelves in July. Earlier this month that was reiterated with news that it should officially launch by the end of June, in fact today! Alongside with Mi5 and Redmi 2, the company is also looking to release the Mi4S smartphone.
